Melanie Blackwell

Melanie is a fine art painter and an alumna of Central Saint Martins, Byam Shaw. She is based in Brighton and works from her studio in Hove.

Trained as a large-scale portrait painter, Melanie has recently shifted her focus toward vibrant, expressive landscapes. She works primarily in oil and pigment on linen, carefully hand-stretching and sizing each canvas herself. This hands-on approach reflects her deep commitment to process, craftsmanship, and authenticity.

At the core of her practice lies a fascination with scale, colour, and accuracy in representation. Melanie builds each piece from the ground up, often mixing her own pigments to achieve the precise tones and textures she seeks. As a result, her work carries both technical precision and a rich, tactile quality.

Her practice draws inspiration from painters such as Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, and Jenny Saville. Like them, she embraces large-scale canvases, bold use of colour, and a dynamic, physical approach to paint.

Originally from the northeast, Melanie has lived in the southeast for the past 20 years. Following recent life changes, she has returned to painting full-time with renewed focus and energy. Each day, she travels to her studio accompanied by her three small dogs. When the weather allows, they make the journey together on her trike, adding a sense of freedom and personality to her daily routine.

Melanie’s work reflects both discipline and spontaneity, combining traditional techniques with a vibrant, contemporary voice.
