OPEN CALL FOR NEW ARTISTS

The Brighton Box Gallery is looking for new artists.

Are you an emerging or established artist looking for gallery representation?

We are inviting artists from across the UK to submit their work for consideration to join The Brighton Box Gallery family.

This is an opportunity to have your work presented in a real gallery environment and on the open art market. Selected artists will have their artwork exhibited at The Brighton Box Gallery and featured on our website for six months.

At the end of this period, we will review how the work has performed in terms of sales, and where there is a strong fit between the artist, their work and our customers, we may invite the artist to become one of our fully represented gallery artists.

We are particularly interested in original, distinctive and exciting work that we believe our customers will connect with.

THE OPPORTUNITY

If selected, your submitted artwork will:

Be exhibited at The Brighton Box Gallery for a period of 6 months.
Be available for customers to view and purchase in the gallery.
Be featured on The Brighton Box Gallery website.
Be presented to our existing collectors, clients and customers in addition to our Gallery visitors.
Allows you the opportunity to see how your work performs in a commercial gallery environment.
Allows us to assess your work for potential ongoing representation.

If the work performs well during the trial period and we feel that your practice is a good fit for the gallery, we may invite you to become one of our represented artists.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Artists based anywhere in the UK are welcome to apply.

You do not need to live in Brighton to apply. However, if you are selected and are not local to Brighton, you must be able to arrange for your artwork to reach the gallery by the delivery deadline we provide.

This can be done by:

Delivering the artwork to the gallery yourself; or
Arranging a courier to deliver it to the gallery.

Please only apply if you are able to fulfil this requirement.

IMPORTANT: THE ARTWORK YOU SUBMIT MUST BE THE ARTWORK YOU PROVIDE

Please choose your submission carefully.

The artwork you submit as part of your application must be the exact artwork you provide to the gallery if you are selected.

You cannot apply using one artwork and then replace it with another artwork after being selected.

The images, artwork details and physical artwork must all correspond.

This is important because our selection will be based on the specific work submitted.

HOW MANY ARTWORKS CAN I SUBMIT?

You can submit up to 5 artworks.

You do not have to submit five. You can apply with fewer if you prefer.

We recommend submitting a selection that represents your work well and gives us a clear understanding of your artistic style.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

Your application should contain one written document containing all the information about your submission.

Please do not put all of the artwork information into the body of your email.

Instead, create one PDF document containing your application information and artwork details.

You should then send the corresponding artwork images separately as JPEG files.

Your application document should include:

Artist information

Real/full name
Artist name, if different
Address
Email address
Telephone number
Website, if applicable
Instagram/social media accounts, if applicable
Any other relevant online portfolio links

About you

Please include a short artist biography introducing yourself and your artistic practice.

Tell us:

Who you are
Where you are based
How long you have been creating work
Your artistic background
What kind of work you create
Any relevant exhibitions, qualifications, awards or achievements

Artist statement

Please include a short artist statement explaining your wider practice.

What you can include:

What motivates your work
The ideas or themes you explore

What you want the viewer to experience or think about

INFORMATION FOR EACH ARTWORK

For every artwork you submit, please provide:

1. Artwork title

For example:

Oil on canvas
Acrylic on canvas
Mixed media
Photography
Sculpture

3. Dimensions

Please provide the exact dimensions in cm.

If the artwork is framed, please give the overall dimensions including the frame.

For example:

Unframed: 60 × 80 cm
Framed: 66 × 86 cm

4. Price

Please provide your anticipated retail price of the artwork.

5. Artwork description (Optional)

Please provide a short description of each artwork.

Tell us:

What inspired the work?
What is the artwork about?
What ideas, emotions or themes does it explore?
Is there a particular story or meaning behind it?
What would you like the viewer to notice or take from the work?

6. Year created

Please include the year the artwork was created.

YOUR IMAGES

Please send a separate JPEG or PNG image for each artwork you are submitting.

For example:

ArtistName_ArtworkTitle.jpg

Please make sure:

The entire artwork is visible.
The photograph is clear and well lit.
There are no people, hands or distracting objects in the photograph.
The image is straight and not distorted.
The artwork is photographed against an appropriate background where possible.

If you are submitting five artworks, please send five individual JPEGs.

Your written application document should clearly correspond with each image.

SUBMISSION FEE

There is a £25 submission fee.

The fee must be transferred to the Brighton Box Gallery bank account when you submit your application.

IMPORTANT: Your application will not be considered unless the £25 submission fee has been paid when you submit your application.

The submission fee is an administration and application fee and is not a guarantee of selection. It’s a non-refundable fee.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Wednesday 2nd September 2026 – 11.59 pm

Applications received after this deadline may not be considered.

We strongly recommend submitting your application before the final day in case there are any problems with your files or payment.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED

Your submitted artwork must arrive at The Brighton Box Gallery by the deadline provided to you.

If you are local, you may deliver your work to the gallery.

If you are based elsewhere in the UK, you are responsible for arranging delivery to the gallery, either personally or through a suitable courier.

Please do not apply with artwork that you are unable to deliver to Brighton.

Your selected artwork will be exhibited in the gallery for approximately six months and will also be listed on The Brighton Box Gallery website.

The six-month period is designed to give both you and the gallery an opportunity to see how your work performs in a commercial gallery environment.

SALES & COMMISSION

If your artwork is selected for the six-month trial period, all artwork displayed at Brighton Box Gallery will be offered for sale.

Brighton Box Gallery operates on a 50% commission basis, plus 20% VAT on the commission.

This means that the gallery commission is 50% of the artwork’s retail selling price, with VAT charged on the gallery commission at the applicable rate.

The final retail price of each artwork must be agreed with Brighton Box Gallery before the artwork is placed on display.

Artists should therefore take the gallery commission and VAT into consideration when setting their retail prices.

Full sales and payment arrangements will be provided to selected artists.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SIX-MONTH TRIAL?

At the end of the trial period, we will review the performance of your work.

We will consider factors including:

Customer response
Sales
Enquiries
Overall fit with the gallery
Presentation
Quality and consistency of your work
How your artwork complements our existing artists
Potential for developing a long-term relationship

Artists whose work performs well and who we feel are a strong fit for Brighton Box Gallery may be invited to become one of our fully represented artists.

Full representation will be subject to a separate agreement and our standard gallery terms.

If full representation is not in order, at the end of the six-month trial period, the artist is responsible for collecting their artwork from Brighton Box Gallery.

The gallery will provide the artist with a date or collection period when the artwork must be collected.

It is the artist’s responsibility to collect their artwork by the date provided by the gallery.

If the artist is unable to collect the artwork personally, they may arrange for a representative or courier to collect it on their behalf.

Alternatively, if the artist would like Brighton Box Gallery to arrange return delivery, the artist must provide pre-paid return postage or an appropriate return courier arrangement to the gallery before the artwork is returned.

The artist is responsible for all costs associated with returning their artwork after the six-month trial period.

Please do not submit artwork unless you are able to arrange its collection or return after the trial period.
